Lady Mayoress of Plymouth famed for her smile and community work
Margaret Savery, former Plymouth Lady Mayoress famed for her smile, died at the age of 76 on 19 January, 2010.
Mrs Savery, wife of former city councillor and Lord Mayor Tom, passed away at St Luke's Hospice, after suffering from cancer.
She was known throughout the city for her involvement in many community groups including the Drake Trefoil Guild, of which she was a founding member.
The couple lived in Plymouth all their lives – most recently in Plympton – and raised four children, who bore them nine grandchildren.
Her husband said: "She was always smiling and didn't have an enemy in the world."
Margaret attended Cornwood Primary School and St Dunstan's Abbey School, transferring to Plymouth High School for Girls for sixth form.
She taught domestic science at Burleigh School before leaving to have the first of her children. When the youngest was old enough, she returned to her love of teaching, working at Public Secondary School for Girls for 14 years and then taught craft work at Busy Bees before retiring.
